The Skilled Worker Gap in Agriculture

Agriculture depends on more than land and equipment. It also depends on people who know how to keep things running.

What People Get Wrong

One thing I think people get wrong about agriculture is that they picture only what happens in a field. They think about planting, harvesting, livestock, or machinery. What gets overlooked is how much of the industry depends on skilled hands on work behind the scenes.

That stands out to me because I have been around that side of it. When I think about agriculture, I do not just think about what is being grown or produced. I also think about the people who are working every other part of the job. It it not just a one man crew. There is lots of work that goes unrecognized.

The Work Behind the Work

A lot of the jobs people forget about are ones like:

  • well drilling
  • pump installation
  • motor repair
  • maintenance
  • jobsite help/support

That work might not get much attention, but without it, the rest of the operation starts feeling the pressure pretty quickly. If something breaks, gets delayed, or cannot be fixed the right way, that creates bigger problems down the line.

Why This Gap Matters

Agriculture also depends on farm equipment mechanics and service technicians who know how to maintain, repair, and troubleshoot the systems that keep operations running.

That is a big reason I think labor issues deserve more attention. USDA’s farm labor research says producers are finding it harder to hire enough workers, and labor costs have continued rising. USDA also reported that the Department of Labor certified around 370,000 temporary agricultural jobs through the H-2A program in 2022.

To me, that shows this is bigger than just a hiring issue. It is also a skills issue. Agriculture needs workers, but it also needs workers who know how to solve problems, handle equipment, and keep things moving when something goes wrong. If fewer people go into that kind of work, the whole industry feels it.

Agriculture is not just about what gets grown or produced. It is also about the people who make all of that possible, and that side of the industry does not get talked about enough.
